HW#1/4 Personal Learning Objectives
Leying's Personal Learning Objectives:
As a young adult who lives in the twenty first century, I want to learn more about technology, although it might seem challenging to me as I have very little experience. Realizing the fact that I will start teaching next year I want to be well informed and prepared for both traditional and digital forms of making art. Therefore I expect the followings from this semester:
1) Learn as much technology as I can, such as audio, video, 3D printing, and creative coding.
2) Be skilled at least two digital formats and make meaningful art pieces with them.
3) Incorporate traditional art materials and new media to make art pieces, which would relate and reflect history.
4) Think about how various of students can use technology to create and expand things and change the perception of what technology can do.
HW#1/3 Art Museums and Technology: The Cleveland Museum of Art
Gallery One is an interactive art gallery at The Cleveland
Museum of Art. It is installed at the entrance of the museum, with
13,000 square foot space, where art and technology provide a platform for
visitors to explore the art pieces at the museum. The space has multi-touched screens which
allow visitors to explore art through their culture, chronology, media, and
interpretation. Each interface also has some interactive games that invite
visitors to engage with the art on view through questions and experiences.
Visitors may also use ArtLens, an iPad app from the museum
for video or audio interpretation of the artwork. At the same time visitors have the choice to
hear from curators, educators, and community members.
The “Tours” function also allows visitors to walk through
the galleries as the director on the iPad talks them through the objects in the
galleries.
The “Scan” function use image recognition to allow visitors
to scan 2D art object for texts or videos, which further explains the art
piece.

HW#1/2 Artist: Christian Marclay
One of my favorite artists who mainly works with technology is Christian Marclay (1955-present). Marclay's work involves sound, photography, video, and film. He is known for use turntables and records to create unique sounds in his work.
Two pieces of artworks I personally saw:
1) The Clock (MOMA, 2012-2013)
The Clock was a 24 hour compilation of time-related scenes from various movies that the time revealed in the film is the same time as the present time. This piece made me think of time differently (how I perceive time and how certain moments could be curtial to others in the film) while watching the film about time.
2) Surround Sounds (Paula Cooper Gallery, 2015)
In fall 2015, I visited the Paula Cooper Gallery at Chelsea's. Marclay's video was projected on a room with four walls. It was dark inside. The elements in the video slowly started showing from the bottom of the walls, and sometimes they would change from one wall to another. The sound, the movement of the element, and the small room made me feel like if I was part of the piece and I could engage in this piece by looking at all the visual elements going on on the walls. I really enjoyed this piece because the duration was not as long as the Clock and viewers could quickly experience the visual effects and the phenomenology when the bold words showed up on the walls.

HW#1/1 Self-Introduction
My name is Leying Zhang, a current TC student at the Art and Art Education program getting my initial teaching certification. I went to LaGuardia Performing Arts for high school, where I received the most traditional fine arts training. Then I went to Hunter to study fine arts. That was the first time I encountered contemporary art, audio, and video making as an art form. After learning audio and video making I saw my concentration, painting, as a such OLD and boring form. I also tried 3D printing, laser cutting, and digital embroidery in my sculpture class last semester. However, I was a little disappointed at the aesthetic look of 3D printed products and laser cutter products. Therefore, I did not explore these technologies further last semester. For this class, I want to explore technologies more and I am very interested in how technology can be taught to people (kids, teens, adults, and the elderlies). My experience level with new media and digital art materials is at an entry level. I would like to advance my skills in them.
