HW# 8/1 Sound Creation: Intro to Sound

This was my first time using Audacity to edit sound. I used three tracks of various sounds I made when I was washing my dishes. I also experimented with materials that made interesting sound: slamming the refrigerator door and playing with plastic bags. The tutorial video on how to use Audacity was extremely helpful on how to manipulate sound. I examined the tracks one after another, cut out the parts I didn't like, relocated some areas, and manipulated the volume a bit. I enjoyed listening my tracks during the process to carefully select the sections because that's when I really paid attention to sound: how they work together. There are many times when I listened to the sound, I wondered what made that sound and what location/environment this could be. It was fascinating to me when various sounds are mixed together they become surreal.

  1. When you described how you made this piece to me in class, I was surprised to learn that all of the sounds were naturally made. The knife cutting was normal cutting of vegetables and not specifically made in order to create a beat. it would be interesting to hear a piece that morphs from this random, natural noise into a more organized, rhythmic sound.

  2. I like how you turn daily activities into the sound piece. It is the combination of sounds that are likely I am making and hearing every day but not usually paying attention that much. Making them recorded and played back on the computer refreshes me and makes me reflect my mundane daily activities.

    1. I agree with Jihyun on this. This is an intimacy that comes out of hearing the sounds someone makes when they are tidying up their apartment. They are recognizable and yet distinct. I feel a little but like we are eavesdropping on your life, but the playful way in which you manipulate the sounds makes it alright!

  3. Leying, I really enjoy this piece. As mentioned above by Jihyun and Gina, it is fascinating that you use everyday sounds into a cohesive sound piece. You are truly inviting us into your daily routine, yet remaining somewhat ambiguous which allows us as listeners to interpret the sounds (how they were made, where they were occurring). I am interested in this piece because it makes me want to move - it sounds like it could make an interesting sound composition for a contemporary dance piece. I enjoyed listening to it again and again.
